This cute little vintage inspired card tutorial is coming soon to my YouTube channel. 🍂

I wanted to create something that could be used as a note card. It would make a great thanksgiving thank you card.

I often get inspired by vintage magazine images because of the patina that the images have and colors that were used (they always are a bit muted or unexpected).

I actually used to have a really small collection of 1960s/1970s Neiman Marcus catalogs that I would obsessively look at as a young 20- something.

I’ll have to see if I still have one lying around. :)

New tutorial coming soooooon…. 🤗

Another pretty fall painting is dropping on Friday for your fall painting collection. I’ve been having so much fun playing with the fall color palette and sharing my ideas with you all!

It’s finally starting to cool down here and so the leaves are slowly changing. Not quite as drastic as in this painting but pretty nonetheless.

In my midwestern hometown the tree colors are just gorgeous this time of year. Same on the East Coast!!

I lived in Boston for about 7yrs and fall was seriously the best season. My husband and I would do all the fall activities including eating apple cider donuts which are AMAZING!!

Another fun fall watercolor painting project - fall bookmarks 🎨🍁

They are super easy and look so cute when done. The magic of these is in the Tombow marker.

If you haven’t tried a Tombow marker, I definitely recommend getting one. Get a black one to start.

They are water-based and bleed in the most beautiful way.

Watercolor Tip of the day 💡

If you’ve been wondering how to protect your watercolor or gouache paintings this is how!

Use Dorlands Wax medium to cover the image.

Don’t use a ton and make sure to gently smooth it into the surface.

I’m sealing these postcards to make sure they don’t get damaged in the mail.

IDEA 💡 turn all of your watercolor kit paintings into postcards. 💌📪

If you are like me, you paint lots of little things and it stacks up in a pile and doesn’t see the light of day until you clean your desk.

Let’s fix that and share some art with others by turning it into a postcard and brighten someone’s day with a little snail mail.

You can use regular stamps or postcard stamps. (I think the postcard stamps are even cheaper than regular stamps!)

And if you are worried about your painting getting messed up just use a little of Dorlands Wax Medium to make it waterproof.

Tiny landscapes are the best way to practice landscapes because you can make multiples at the same time and in one sitting.

Just cut a sheet of 9 x 12” watercolor paper into 6 pieces.

Then find your favorite YouTube channel (@ landaruenart) and get painting. 🖼️

Gearing up for a fun fall watercolor class. I’ve been searching for reference images that have all the colors that you might imagine when dreaming up a “fall scene”.

This one was moody and dark which I found fun to paint. I mostly used the wet-into wet technique and then added the final details when dry.

I’ve got another fun yellowy autumn scene that I’ll share soon that I also really liked. We will see which ones make the cut for my class.

Testing out some fall themed paintings today. 🍁 🍂

I like making minis in stages to think through color, layering process and teachability.

This one needs at least one more test that is slightly bigger than these (these two are slightly under 3x3 inches and done quickly).

We will see if this one makes the cut.

I am a firm believer that anyone can learn how to paint or draw.

I’ve been busy working on new watercolor kit designs and am excited to share this one!

It’s California’s state flower and if you’ve visited in the spring, it’s very obvious why. The hills, sidewalk cracks, and medians are filled with them.

It is quite a sight to see a hillside covered with them, they are so beautiful. Highly recommend a visit in person or online search.

Working on a new postcard kit. 🌉 Swipe to see the stages and read below for my process. 👇

Making these takes a bit longer than my traditional kit designs because there are so many elements to consider.

I typically start with composition then decide time of day and season (this impacts color choice).

Then I test out a color palette and paint some very fast minis.

For this scene I initially thought I’d do a sunset but wasn’t into the colors so I switched to a warm daytime look.

So then I made another mini, this time with the new palette and more details.

On to the next step 👉 larger painting.

Before & After of my jellyfish 🪼

Playing around with a jellyfish watercolor kit for all my aquatic museums. These are my two sketches/tests.

I’m leaning towards the pink one and adding a baby jellyfish so it fills the space a bit more but not sure if it needs it yet.

My gray whale was so much fun to paint and now needs some ocean buddies. 🫧

So today I played around with a starfish and started a wave page. 🌊

As I was making the wave page it reminded me of my classroom art teaching days when I had my advanced high school art students make a “visual art journal page”.

It is kind of visual research page - with notes, ideas, reflections and thumbnails or swatches.

I now feel compelled to bring that back in my own work and make one for my waves and ocean. 🤓

I guess I’m in my bird era…

But I don’t think there was a time that I wasn’t in it. ☺️

I’ve been a bird fan since I was a kid. My dad had this amazing little bird identification book that I would pour over while hoping to spot one.

It had beautiful illustrations and has inspired several of my own paintings (one actually includes the little book as a subject).

I think what is always so fascinating about them or what has drawn me to them is that despite their small unassuming size, they have the most unique ability.

Dreaming of sunny beach days 🏖️

We’ve had a very odd cold snap here in Northern California during a month that is typically super duper hot and dry.

I’ll gladly take it over 100 degree days, but it also doesn’t quite feel like summer.

Back to the beach dreams…

Do you have a morning routine that sets the tone for your day?

Or something that resets a tough start?

I do and it has become so habitual and calming. It feels kind of like having that first cup of coffee, comforting and a signal that the day is fresh and new.

What I like to do after that first cup of coffee and a good breakfast is to check on my plants.

I’m totally obsessed with checking on them. I love every aspect of it - have they grown? Do they look thirsty? Has anything bloomed or created fruit?

And one of my favorites to check on are my morning glories. 🌸 They are the brightest and bloom first in the morning (hence the name), so I love getting a “first look” as the new ones open up and bloom.
