Looking for a sustainable DIY creative project? This paper clay recipe is perfect for making low waste projects while using household materials. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or just starting, making your own paper clay is a rewarding and eco-friendly activity. Plus, it’s super easy to make with materials you probably already have at home. Follow these simple steps to create your very own paper clay.
Materials Needed:
Paper or cardboard
Water
Blender
Bowl
Glue (I made homemade glue with water and flour (recipe to come!) but regular Elmers glue will work as well)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Tear Up Paper or Cardboard
Start by tearing up your chosen paper or cardboard into small pieces. The smaller the pieces, the easier the process will be. This step is perfect for recycling old newspapers, scrap paper, or cardboard boxes.
Step 2: Soak the Paper in Water
Place the torn paper into a bowl and soak it in water. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes. This will help soften the paper and make it easier to blend into a pulp.
Step 3: Blend Paper and Water to Make a Pulp
After soaking, transfer the paper and water mixture into a blender. Blend it until it forms a smooth, pulpy consistency. This pulp is the base of your paper clay.
Step 4: Remove Excess Water
This step is crucial! Drain the excess water from the pulp. You can use a sieve or simply squeeze the pulp with your hands to remove as much water as possible. The less water, the better your clay will hold together.
Step 5: Add Glue and Mix Well
Finally, add glue to the pulp and mix it thoroughly. The amount of glue depends on how much pulp you have, but a good rule of thumb is to add enough to make the mixture sticky and moldable. Mix until you achieve a smooth, clay-like texture. I like a 2:1 ratio (give or take).
And there you have it – your very own homemade paper clay! Now, it’s time to get creative. Use your paper clay to sculpt, mold, and craft beautiful art pieces. This clay is perfect for making wall decorations like suns or masks, ornaments, and even small sculptures.
Tip: Store any unused paper clay in an airtight container in the fridge to keep it from drying out.
